| Sports news has always been the main channel for people to obtain event information.Football is the world’s No.1 sport with a broad base of fans.Football reports occupy an important position in sports reports.Chinese football reports include reports on national team matches,professional league reports,campus football reports and many other aspects.The performance of the Chinese men’s football team in the World Cup preparation cycle has always been the focus of attention of fans and sports media.The reports about the Chinese men’s football team impacting the World Cup are the most typical sample of Chinese football reports.Appraisal theory originates from Halliday’s system functional linguistics.As a discourse analysis tool,appraisal theory aims to examine and explain the way of speakers or authors expressing attitudes and emotions.After more than 20 years of development,appraisal theory has been widely used in the study of news discourse.Different from news in the traditional sense,in addition to the objective description of the game process and results,sports news also expresses the authors’ subjective emotions.The application of appraisal theory can reveal the authors’ emotional inclinations,ways of expressing attitudes and positions,and how they achieve the interpersonal meaning of negotiation and unity with readers.This thesis takes Martin and White’s appraisal theory as the research framework,takes China football reports as the research object,and uses the literature review method,text analysis method and case study method as main research methods.This thesis first built a Chinese football report corpus containing 72 discourses with a total of 160,000 words,and then mark and count the appraisal resources and issues in the corpus.In terms of appraisal resources,this thesis analyzes the overall distribution characteristics of appraisal resources in the corpus,compares and analyzes the differences in the distribution of appraisal resources in the three sub-corpus and the distribution of high-frequency emotional words;in terms of issues,this thesis analyzes the issues in Chinese football reports and discusses the appraisal attitudes involved in different issues.At the end of the research process,this thesis selects texts related to the coach issue from the corpus,and applies the appraisal theory system framework to examine how authors construct their attitudes and positions towards coaches related.The thesis finds that the account subject-personal corpus discourses are more direct in terms of attitudes expression than the account subject-company and account subject-media corpus discourses,and their attitudes toward Chinese men’s football are also more negative;the high-frequency emotional words in three corpus are the inclination appraisal resources in the affect subsystem,the authors of the discourses in the corpus are full of expectations for the future of Chinese football and provide suggestions for the current situation of Chinese football;the evaluation process of coach issues in Chinese football reports presents a complex feature.Finally,this thesis provides ideas and suggestions for promoting the localization of appraisal theory and the application of appraisal theory in sports news discourses. |
