Analysis Of Narrative Subjects And Characteristics Of Table Tennis Reports In International Communication

Table tennis,as a leisure sport of the upper class aristocracy in Europe,gradually developed into a competitive sport in the early 20th century and was loved by people.However,table tennis has different characteristics in different cultural backgrounds.Although table tennis is not the most popular sport in Europe,it has a high degree of participation in the British community.In Asia,the development of table tennis is related to politics.In South Korea,table tennis is not only an important bridge between the two Koreas,but also one of the main sports that the two Koreas participate in.In China,table tennis has the title of "national ball" and won many honors.From the perspective of Martin and White’s Appraisal Theory,this paper analyzes the use of Engagement resources and Attitude resources in table tennis reports in international communication,studies the narrative subjects and characteristics of table tennis reports in international communication,and reveals the different emotional attitudes of different media in table tennis reports.This paper selects 118 table tennis news reports from China Daily,Yonhap,JoongAng Ilbo,BBC,The Daily Telegraph and the official website of the International Table Tennis Federation,and uses the method of text analysis to mark out the evaluation resources in each news,so as to explore the narrative subject and characteristics of table tennis in different media reports.There are three main conclusions.First,the main narrative subjects in table tennis reports are athletes.In the reports of China Daily and ITTF,the narrative subjects are diverse,while in the reports of Yonhap,JoongAng Ilbo,BBC and The Daily Telegraph,the narrative subjects are relatively single.Second,in table tennis reports,the use of Attitude resources is mainly positive,and the use of Appreciation resources is the most.The Affect resources in China Daily,BBC,The Daily Telegraph and ITTF are the second,and the Judgment resources in Yonhap and JoongAng Ilbo are the second.Thirdly,under the same topic,the Engagement and emotion of narrative subject are different.In China Daily,most of them are athletes and coaches,mainly Appreciating resources;in Yonhap and JoongAng Ilbo,most of them are athletes and government personnel,and the use of Attitude resources is relatively balanced;in BBC and The Daily Telegraph,most of them are athletes,mainly Appreciating resources;in ITTF,most of them are athletes and government personnel,mainly Appreciating resources.
