A Discourse Analysis Of Women’s Football Reports In The Past Decade(2012-2022)

The Chinese women’s football team is an indispensable part of Chinese football,carrying the mission of fulfilling the expectations of Chinese fans and promoting national spirit with their excellent performance.With the development of sports and changes in society in China,the discourse surrounding Chinese women’s football in the media has also evolved.After the 18 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012,the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core made important plans and strategies for sports from the perspective of governing the country,solving key issues in China’s sports reform and development.Against this backdrop of new historical and social contexts,it is worth exploring whether the changes in the times and social context will affect the discourse surrounding the coverage of Chinese women’s football.This article takes the example of the "Football" newspaper(2012-2022)and uses Fairclough’s three-level discourse analysis theory as the basic framework,combined with relevant communication theory and corpus tools,to analyze the discourse characteristics of the coverage of Chinese women’s football in the new era from the perspectives of text analysis,discourse practices,and social practices.The basic structure includes an overall description of women’s football coverage using content analysis,followed by an analysis of text features by analyzing vocabulary,tone,rhetoric,titles,and images.At the discourse practices level,it explores the intertextuality of news discourse production in women’s football.Finally,at the social practices level,it analyzes the discourse presentation of women’s football coverage in the new era,reviews the different stages of the "Football" newspaper’s discourse on women’s football since the development of women’s football in China,summarizes the changes over time,and analyzes the reasons for the changes in women’s football discourse in the new era,attempting to reveal the developmental logic and theoretical requirements behind the "Football" newspaper’s coverage of women’s football.Under the background of the new era,the study of the football newspaper finds that the construction of the spirit of women’s football is still a very important theme in the current women’s football reports.The newspaper has tried a range of strategies,including "Emphasizing individuality and returning to commonality","Sports stardom for professional players" and "Diversified discourse subjects",to richly display the image of "Sonorous rose" of women’s football,and transmit the "Spirit of women’s football" that conforms to the development law of sports in the new era.This process also integrates the spirit of women’s football into the spirit of Chinese sports,and lays an important foundation for building a strong sports country.On the whole,by presenting the image of "Sonorous rose",the report endows the women’s football with a deeper spiritual connotation.The image of this kind of "Sonorous rose" has changed gradually from "Hero-style" to "Civilian-style" and is closer to the public life.By promoting the "Spirit of women’s football",the report hopes to inspire people to love and participate in sports,and take women’s football players as examples to lead the positive changes in social values.
