Malaysia,as one of the multi-ethnic countries in Southeast Asia, has particularities in its ethnic issues.Malaysia’s New Economic Policy was implemented from 1971 to 1990,and the two main goals set by the New Economic policy, namely poverty eradication and social restructuring, were basically realized.More importantly, the New Economic Policy established the dominant position of the Malays and "artificially" coordinated the relationship among various ethnic groups. In the past 20 years,Malaysia’s economy has developed rapidly, and ethnic equality has been promoted for a long time at this stage, which is prominently reflected in the coordination of the economic, political, social and cultural equality of the three major ethnic groups of Malays,Chinese and Indians develop. The implementation background of the New Economic Policy can be traced back to the colonial period. The colonial rule of Britain and Japan laid a solid foundation for the situation and development of various ethnic groups in Malaysia. The "5.13" incident in 1969 directly prompted the Malaysian government to take measures against the relevant ethnic groups, pointing out the economic development inequality among ethnic groups and responding to the demands of Malays as the main ethnic group.Previous studies mostly started from the new economic policy, reviewed its implementation background and measures, and explored the impact of the new economic policy on Malaysia, etc. In addition, studies on ethnic issues mostly focused on ethnic relations and politics, and rarely focused on ethnic equality. Therefore, the research focuses on the equal development of ethnic groups in Malaysia.Based on the main line of the New Economic Policy,it focuses on the equal development of the three major ethnic groups in Malaysia in economic, political, social and cultural aspects of the New economic policy, and takes the equal development of these three aspect as the indicators to observe the equal development of ethnic groups in Malaysia, and highlights the dominant position of the Malays and the applicability of the policy. The New Economic Policy has had a profound impact on ethnic equality in Malaysia, and subsequent policies have continued to promote ethnic equality through various initiatives.
