Research On The Damage To The Credibility Of The U.S.in NATO During The Trump Era And Its Impact

International credibility refers to the judgment of other countries on the reliability of a country in implementing the policies it has declared.Based on statements from NATO allies and statistics on US credibility from research institutions,it is concluded that during the Trump administration,the US’s reputation in NATO was damaged and showed a downward trend.Based on this fact,this article analyzes the performance and reasons for the damage to the credibility of the United States in NATO during the Trump era,and points out the impact caused by the damage.In the specific research process,literature research method and case analysis method were mainly used.In addition,this article limits the scope of NATO to the United States and European member countries,excluding Canada and Turkey.The study found that international credibility consists of three elements: capability perception,interest perception,and determination reputation.During the Trump era,NATO allies demonstrated negative perceptions towards these three aspects of the US,making the country’s credibility in NATO worrisome.Specifically,from a capability perception perspective,the relative decline of US strength and domestic political polarization led NATO allies to question the US’s ability to maintain European security.From an interest perception perspective,the US’s strategic focus shifting further eastward and its reduced participation in European security-related agreements made NATO allies believe that common interests between Europe and the US were weakening.Finally,from a determination reputation perspective,Trump’s own "pro-Russian" thinking,Trump’s tendency to adopt a tough stance and populism leading to US foreign policy overly emphasizing its own interests made NATO allies question the US’s resolve to maintain European security.The damage to the credibility of the United States in NATO during the Trump era not only undermined America’s leadership within NATO,but also damaged America’s national image and prompted European countries to place greater emphasis on strengthening their own capabilities.At the same time,it has also had a certain impact on the liberal international order led by the United States.This article mainly consists of three parts.The first part is the introduction,which mainly elaborates on the research background,significance,definition of related concepts,domestic and foreign research status,research ideas and methods,research innovation,and deficiencies.The second part is the main body,which first summarizes the relevant theories and cognition of international credibility and then analyzes the background,performance,causes,and impacts of the damage to US credibility in NATO during the Trump period in sequence.The third part is the conclusion,which mainly summarizes the damage to US credibility in NATO during the Trump period and points out the key points that countries need to grasp when considering international credibility.At the same time,based on the current situation of US credibility in NATO,it proposes relevant issues that can be further studied in depth.
