Since the realization of the rural revitalization strategy in 2017,tremendous changes have taken place in China’s rural society, but social problems in rural areas are also constantly emerging. To promote the orderly development of social fairness and justice in the whole society, the sense of social justice of rural residents should also be paid attention to.Housing is closely related to people’s lives. It not only has the function of asset appreciation, but also has the function of psychological protection. It is an important factor affecting the lifestyle of rural residents, and also a hot topic related to the national economy and people’s livelihood.Improving rural residents’ sense of social justice has a long-term impact on the realization of the second centenary goal and the strategy of rural revitalization. However, there are few studies on rural residents’ sense of social justice, and the existing studies lack in-depth analysis of housing and other related factors. Therefore, from the perspective of the impact of housing on rural residents’ sense of social justice, this paper analyzes OLS regression, moderating effect test and group differences using data from the 2019 Comprehensive Survey of Social Conditions in China and the National Statistical Yearbook 2020.This paper explores the effects of the nature of self-owned housing, the number of urban self-owned housing, housing floor space and housing expenditure on rural residents’ sense of social justice and its mechanism. After empirical analysis, the following conclusions are drawn:(1)OLS regression analysis of CSS2019 data found that housing floor area had a significant positive impact on rural residents’ sense of social justice, while public housing property rights had a positive but not significant impact on rural residents’ sense of social justice. The number of houses owned by rural residents in urban areas and the per capita living expenditure have a significant negative impact on their sense of social justice. The reason is that most rural residents want to own houses in urban areas, and the rising real estate prices in urban areas bring more repayment pressure to rural residents. As a result, rural residents with more self-owned houses have lower sense of social justice.(2)By further exploring the moderating effect of the number of urban owned houses and housing floor area on rural residents’ sense of social justice,it is found that the trust of the township government plays a positive moderating role in the influence of the number of urban owned houses on rural residents’ sense of social justice. The possible explanation is that the number of urban owned houses increases the living pressure of rural residents. In the face of life difficulties, seeking solutions from the local government will increase the sense of trust in the government, but it also reflects the complexity and diversity of social problems.(3)The regression results of group differences show that, from the perspective of gender division, rural women pay more attention to the number of urban owned houses and living expenses. In terms of regional division, rural residents in the central region pay more attention to housing property rights, while rural residents in the western region pay more attention to the number of self-owned houses in urban areas. For rural residents in the eastern region, housing property rights and living expenses have a more significant impact.
