The report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China points out developing the whole-process people’s democracy and ensuring the position of the people as masters of the country.Grassroots democracy is an important manifestation of the whole-process people’s democracy, and the participation of urban and rural residents in grassroots democratic elections is not only the most important part of community-level self-governance,but also the basic project of developing the whole-process people’s democracy. In recent years, with the development of the Internet and the acceleration of media integration, the media has not only changed the lifestyles of urban and rural residents, but also provided an important channel and platform for urban and rural residents to obtain political information, understand political culture and acquire political knowledge.Media use influences urban and rural residents’ values, social mentality and political attitudes, and has a subtle influence on their grassroots democratic election behavior.Based on the data of the Chinese General Social Survey(CGSS),this study analyzes the relationship between media use and grassroots democratic election behavior of urban and rural residents.Firstly, the research hypothesis of this study is proposed through literature combing.Secondly, based on the data of CGSS2013,CGSS2015 and CGSS2017,this study analyzes the status of media use and grassroots democratic election behavior of urban and rural residents, and a gray model is used to make short-term predictions on their development trends. Then, the data of CGSS2017 is selected to analyze the relationship between media use and grassroots democratic election behavior of urban and rural residents in detail, and the relationship between media use factors, demographic factors, economic and social status factors, social attitude and perception factors and grassroots democratic election behavior of urban and rural residents is verified by constructing a binary logistic regression model, and robustness tests are conducted. In addition, annual comparative analysis and urban-rural comparative analysis are conducted. Finally, based on the data results, some reflections and discussions are conducted in this study.By analyzing,it is found that the use of traditional media by urban and rural residents shows a decreasing trend and the use of new media shows a significant increasing trend, and new media will increasingly become the main source of information for urban and rural residents. In terms of the relationship between media use and grassroots democratic election behavior of urban and rural residents, the frequency of using traditional media such as newspapers and TV has a positive correlation with grassroots democratic election behavior of both urban and rural residents, and the participation of grassroots democratic election behavior of urban and rural residents who prefer to use traditional media is higher;the frequency of using Internet has a positive correlation with grassroots democratic election behavior of urban residents, but a negative correlation with rural residents’ grassroots democratic election behavior. In addition, this study finds that demographic factors, economic and social status factors, social attitudes and perception factors all influence urban and rural residents’ grassroots democratic election behavior to different degrees. There are also some annual differences and urban-rural differences in the regression results of each influencing factor.Based on the above findings, this study conductes a summary analysis and explores the reasons behind them.Based on the quantitative findings, this study proposes brief countermeasures from three perspectives: media effectiveness, election channels, and residents themselves.
