In recent years, the strategic value of the Indo-Pacific region is gradually coming into view in the context of the change in the strategic focus of the United States.correspondingly, academic research on the "Indo-Pacific strategy" has also intensified.Australia and India, both of which have a wide influence in the Indo-Pacific region, are also moving closer to each other as advocates of the concept. This trend became more apparent after the restart of the "QUAD"(a quartet strategic mechanism founded by the US,Japan,India and Australia)in 2017.Even though in the past time period, the bilateral relations between India and Australia were generally considered by the academic circles to be the weakest part of relations in the "QUAD" and were not favored by the academic mainstream;frequent exchanges of two countries seem to be reversing people’s past perceptions of the bilateral relationship between India and Australia: that is,in fact,India and Australia have established a certain kind of "quasi-alliance" relationship in recent years.Among them,it’s notable that the related defence cooperation between the two countries: they have made a mount of achievements in bilateral defense cooperation in recent years, and that can be said to have embarked on the "fast track" of cooperation in security matters between the two nations. Therefore,it can be seen that the core of the "quasi-alliance" is more clearly manifested in the field of defense cooperation between the two countries.Although limited by various subjective and objective conditions,it is still hard to clearly predict the future height of the defense "quasi-alliance" relationship between two countries. But it is undeniable that,at least in the foreseeable future, for the purpose of containing China’s development, safeguarding the common interests of India and Australia, and being pushed by the Washington, the bilateral defense "quasi-alliance" relationship between India and Australia would keep growing in the future. In this context, this thesis seeks to study the security cooperation between India and Australia under the new status quo by combining theory with practice. This article could be separated into following chapters: First there would be the introduction part, which would briefly present the reasons for choosing this theme, the importance of the research, the current research status of domestic and foreign academic circles, meanwhile the research ideas and research methodologies for readers. Then in the first chapter, the author would emphatically explain the theories adopted in this article, and thus construct the theoretical framework of this article.Secondly,in the second chapter, the thesis would specifically introduce the background of the formation of the India-Australia defense "quasi-alliance" and its recent performance.Again,in the third chapter, the author would analyze the current factors affecting the development of the "quasi-alliance" relationship between India and Australia from two dimensions:they are namely the factors that promote the development of India-Australia "quasi-alliance" and the factors that hinder the development of "quasi-alliance" relationship.Next,in the fourth chapter, the author would predict the future of India-Australia defense relationship according to the research of this thesis.Additionally, author would also point out two cooperation areas in which the two countries might make significant progress in the future.Last but not least, the author would combine the research results of the thesis to make an attempt to provide policy suggestions for China’s future response. |
