Abstract/Summary:
In my country’s multi-level elderly care service system,home-based elderly care still occupies an important position. As a familiar living place, the family is still the first choice for the elderly in my country at present and even for a long time in the future. However, the core and miniaturization of the family structure has led to the lack of pension resources and the weakening of family pension functions. At the same time, with the continuous improvement of children’s education level, the living distance between children and parents has increased from near to far,and the economic level of children has also been improved, and the supply of parent-generation pension resources has undergone certain changes. Therefore,it is very necessary to study the relationship between the education level of offspring and the supply of parental pension resources.Based on this, this study uses the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data, and uses measurement methods such as OLS and Propensity Score Matching to explore the impact of offspring’s education level on the supply of parental retirement resources, and to verify its mechanism of action. The results of the study found that the education level of offspring had a significant positive impact on the supply of pension resources in terms of parental economic support and spiritual comfort, and had a significant negative impact on the supply of pension resources in terms of parental living care.Robustness test using children with the lowest education level found no change in results.Further mechanism analysis shows that the income level of children plays a partial mediating role in the influence of the education level of the children on the supply of parental pension resources.Inter-generational care has a moderating effect on the effect of offspring’s education level on parental pension resource supply.Heterogeneity analysis found that there were regional heterogeneity and family structure heterogeneity in the impact of offspring’s education level on parental pension resource supply. In this regard, corresponding suggestions are given:First, establish a multi-source pension resource supply system with family pension as the mainstay and social pension as a supplement;Second, increase investment in rural children’s education and improve the quality of life of rural elderly in their later years;Third, actively use the "residual heat" of the elderly to encourage middle-aged and elderly people to provide moderate inter-generational care.To a certain extent, the research on the supply of inter-generational pension resources in this paper has practical significance for improving the quality of elderly care, regulating the behavior and direction of education investment, solving the problem of family pension, and dealing with the weakening of family pension function brought about by social changes.
