Chieftain system is a political system in which the central authorities of Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties assigned officials to the leaders of the border ethnic minorities,so that they could inherit their duties, lead their lands and govern their people, and rule the local ethnic minorities.Chieftain system was formed in the Yuan Dynasty, continued to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The existence of chieftain system has gradually brought the southwest frontier into the territory of the dynasty country, changed the lax situation of fragmented affairs in minority areas, strengthened the relationship between chieftain in the southwest frontier and the central dynasty, and made contributions to maintaining the stability of the frontier and the unity of the country.Southwest frontier ethnic areas are the main areas where native chieftain system is implemented, and Yunnan is the key area where the chieftain system is implemented. The research results of native chieftain system in Yunnan are also abundant.Generally speaking, the research on Yunnan chieftain system is mainly concentrated in the core area of chieftain, while the research on chieftain equivalent to the border area is still weak. With the deepening of research, the research on frontier chieftain has attracted more and more attention from academic circles.Menglian County,Pu ’er City,Yunnan Province,is located in the southwest of Yunnan Province, with Lancang River in the east,Ximeng County in the north,Myanmar in the south and west. The Menglian chieftain in history includes Menglian County,Ximeng County,Lancang County and some areas of Myanmar adjacent to the border line. The Menglian Dai chieftain who lived in this land is the long-term ruler in this area. The Menglian Dai chieftain regime lasted for more than 600 years from its establishment to its demiseand experienced 28 generations of chieftain. Its special geographical position makes it play an important historical role in maintaining the unification and stability of the border area. Now,the academic research on the Dai chieftain in Menglian mainly focuses on the traditional chieftain system and historical narration, involving the origin and development of the Dai chieftain, combing the general situation of chieftain establishment, history and culture, etc. In this paper,Menglian Dai chieftain of Yunnan as the research object, through the history of the Dai and chieftain evolution history, further to explore its unique history and culture, revealed the Menglian Dai chieftain in the history of ethnic interaction and state relations. This paper is divided into four chapters to discuss.First of all,by combing the formation and distribution of the Dai ethnic group in Menglian in history,it records and traces its ethnic origin in Chinese and Dai languages.Secondly, the historical evolution process from the establishment of the Central Government of Menglian to Xuanfu Squad of Menglian, this paper summarizes the establishment and chieftain system of Menglian in history, focusing on the ruling system with orthodox chieftain as the core.Third The Ming and Qing dynasties government of Menglian chieftain’s economic development and cultural integration, which reflects the state of Menglian chieftain’s deep ruling, but also reflects Menglian Dai chieftain’s concept of the country gradually clear. Finally This paper focuses on the interaction between Menglian Dai chieftain and surrounding chieftain, ethnic groups in the territory, and the relationship with the central government.Through the case study of Menglian Dai chieftain in southwest frontier area,we hope to supplement the study of southwest frontier history and Yunnan local history.Menglian Dai chieftain in the southwest frontier area is of great significance to the governance and development of the frontier area under the background of the new era,as well as the handling of ethnic relations and other issues.
