English is a global language.Throughout history,various English accents have formed,which brings lots of challenges to interpreters.Generally speaking,MTI students in China are familiar with British and American accents because they often listen to these accents while learning English.As a result,students face little accentrelated problems when interpreting materials in British and American accents.However,most students are very unfamiliar with accented English,which has a huge negative impact on their interpreting quality.Professional interpreters often encounter speakers with accented English.The thesis aims at revealing students’ training conditions regarding accented English,finding their difficulties in training,and offering suggestions to help MTI students or beginning learners to enhance accented English to Chinese(E-C)interpreting skill.Targeting CFAU MTI students of Class 2021 and Class 2022,the thesis combines a questionnaire survey and an interview to learn about how they perceive accented EC interpreting,how they practice,and what difficulty they face in training.The researcher finds that most students agree on the significance of accented E-C interpreting training and that many of them can ensure training regularly.However,it’s common for students to have problems with training intensity,preparation,material selection,tackling strategy,and after-training review.To be specific,students don’t prioritize accented E-C interpreting,fail to make target effort on certain accents,rarely use tackling strategies intentionally,fail to make after-training reviews effectively,etc.Based on these findings,the author puts forward suggestions to students and instructors on how to improve students’ accented E-C interpreting performance.For students,it’s suggested that they increase their training frequency and average training time,and spare more time in preparation and after-training review.In order to improve students’ training motivation,instructors need to add more material in accented English into teaching and exams.To solve students’ difficulties in training,instructors are suggested to offer more quality material in accented English and offer students ways to make effective after-training reviews and learn to use more tackling strategies. |
