Chinese-to-English Simultaneous Interpreting Practice Report Of Training Courses On Pediatrics

Children’s health serves as a pillar of national health.The Chinese government has been committed to safeguarding children’s life and health.Amid the rampant COVID-19,apart from caring for domestic children’s health,China has taken the lead in launching a wide array of foreign assistance programs on pediatrics in a bid to enhance the diagnosis and treatment capabilities of medical workers in a host of developing countries,thus facilitating the building of a global health community with a shared future for humankind.The year of 2021 witnessed the first online holding of the training courses on pediatrics for developing countries,which are sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and organized by Hunan Children’s Hospital.The author of this report provided Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpreting services for both opening and closing ceremonies of three training courses.Based on the Effort Model of Daniel Gile,the principle of syntactic linearity,as well as formal texts featured by long sentences,fast speed and information-intensive discourse,this report summarizes six interpreting techniques for both opening and closing ceremonies: in conducting long and complicated sentences,the interpreting technique of segmentation is given priority.In terms of sense groups and markers like verbs,conjunctions and transitional words,segmenting long sentences is advantageous to alleviate the pressure of short-term memory and psychology,thus enabling interpreters to spare more effort to output;in a bid to make sure completeness and clarity of sentence meanings,the interpreting technique of amplification is employed.In coping with differences of cultural background between two countries,amplification excels in unveiling cultural context,which is helpful to generate resonance among targeted listeners;while tackling intensive information and fast speed,the interpreting technique of anticipation is wielded in light of fixed sentence patterns and structures,given topics as well as known background knowledge,depending on accumulation and on-site quick response.Anticipation can save time for interpreters to conduct logical analysis;while dealing with some sentences piled by verbs,word-for-word literal interpreting tends to be rigid and mechanical.The interpreting technique of conversion from verbs to nouns or adjectives is more in line with the thinking mode of target language;to make target language more smooth,the interpreting technique of negation is more in commensurate with English language convention,thus facilitating smooth running of sentences and understanding among targeted listeners;the interpreting technique of omission helps to avoid redundancy,which is usually applied to avoid repeated explanations and unnecessary modifiers.This report is conducive to providing references for future interpreters of foreign assistance training courses on pediatrics so as to ensure the completeness,accuracy and fluency of Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpreting.
