During the Soviet period,Russian was one of the official languages of Ukraine and was widely spoken. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union,Ukraine became an independent country and began its nation-building and national renaissance.During this process,as Ukrainian national identity and national consciousness increased,so did the awareness of using Ukrainian language. This increase in awareness also brought about a decline in the status of the Russian language in Ukraine. To some extent, this change reflected the importance Ukraine attached to its national identity and cultural traditions, but at the same time it led to the deterioration of Russian-Ukrainian relations and tensions. The overall situation of the crisis in Ukraine is always in a complex state of flux.Through a review of the Russian language policy implemented by successive Ukrainian governments, this paper outlines the status and changes in the use of the Russian language in education and mass media in Ukraine, summarizes the characteristics of the use of the Russian language in Ukraine, deeply analyzes the internal and external factors affecting the changing status of the Russian language in Ukraine, analyzes the impact of the changing status of the Russian language in Ukraine on Russian-Ukrainian relations, and predicts the future direction of the changing status of the Russian language in Ukraine. The study found that after the collapse of the Soviet Union,Ukraine introduced a number of Russian language policies to narrow the use of the Russian language in education, mass media, and other areas, resulting in a steady decline in the status of the Russian language in Ukraine and a significant reduction in its use.Despite this, the Russian language is still characterized by a high rate of realistic usage in Ukraine today. The promotion of the Ukrainian language and restrictions on the Russian language by the Ukrainian government have caused great dissatisfaction among the Russian-speaking population, and the changing status of the Russian language in Ukraine is influenced not only by internal Ukrainian factors, but also by the United States, the European Union, and Russia. The change in the status of the Russian language in Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union is correlated with the change in the relationship between Russia and Ukraine, with the year 2014 as a turning point, when the Crimea incident led to a rapid cooling of the relationship between Russia and Ukraine, which was followed by a further weakening of the status of the Russian language in Ukraine. It can be seen that the issue of the status of the Russian language has become an important tool in the Russian-Ukrainian diplomatic game, acting as a "weather vane" in the development of Russian-Ukrainian relations. In the future, the issue of the status of the Russian language in Ukraine will continue to influence Russian-Ukrainian politics, and there is a possibility of a new linguistic conflict.
