| Compared with professional interpreters,student interpreters may produce more improper pauses while simultaneous interpreting,which can especially become a blow to novice interpreters’ self-confidence.Therefore,it is necessary to discover the similarities and differences between professional and student interpreters on improper pauses in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting in order to discuss the coping strategies.The key to this study is to define the improper pauses.Based on the previous research,this paper regards the pauses over 0.3 seconds that negatively affect the fluency of the interpretation and have no function of expressing meanings as improper pause.This study is designed as a comparative experiment report.This paper invites 15second-year graduate students majoring in interpreting at CFAU and 5 professional interpreters who have more than two years of experience in simultaneous interpretation.After the transcribing,labeling and analysis of the collected audio recordings,as well as the review of questionnaire surveys and recalled interviews,this paper draws the following conclusions: 1)Both professional and student interpreters are prone to produce improper pauses due to mental fatigue in the later stage of the interpretation process.2)Compared with professional interpreters,student interpreters produce more and longer improper pauses in simultaneous interpretation.3)According to the main reasons for improper pauses made by student interpreters,it is suggested that the improper pauses can be reduced by adjusting the mentality,improving the listening ability and expression ability,getting rid of bad language habits,and performing sentence-driven exercises.In addition,the fluency of interpretation output can be improved by strengthening self-monitoring and rational use of interpretation strategies. |
