| The fluency of simultaneous interpreting is one of the criteria for distinguishing student interpreters from professional interpreters and improper pauses affects the fluency of simultaneous interpreting.The factors of the immediacy of simultaneous interpreting and the lack of interpreting ability often lead to improper pauses in the process of simultaneous interpreting,affecting the quality of the interpreting output.The case studied in this thesis is the Mock Conference of International Digital Trade:The Coming Battle of Great Powers.Based on existing studies on improper pauses,the author defines improper pauses accordingly.Through comparison between the source language and its interpreted version,combining in previous classification approaches on pauses in interpreting,the author classifies improper pauses into silent improper pauses and non-silent improper pauses.Based on Gile’s Effort Model,the author analyzes the causes of the main problems in the process of listening,delivering and allocation of cognitive resources,which include difficulty in hearing and distinguishing the professional knowledge and numbers,insufficient deverbalization ability,improper use of strategies,input load and output load.To cope with these problems,the author proposes methods as follows:accumulating background information,doing more listening practice with numbers,doing more deverbalization practice,using strategies rationally,doing more shadowing and intervention training,so as to improve the fluency of simultaneous interpreting and reach the level of professional interpreters as soon as possible. |
