This is an English-Chinese translation practice report, and the original text is excerpted from the fifth chapter of the educational technology book Engaging Learners Through Zoom:Strategies for Virtual Teaching Across Disciplines written by Jonathan Brennan. With the transformation of educational informatization especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the book provides corresponding teaching strategies for teachers who use Zoom and other platforms for virtual teaching by explaining the operation of the relevant functions of Zoom and using a variety of subjects as examples. Moreover, specific suggestions are made to address issues such as meeting fatigue occurring in online meetings, which may push students to focus on their learning.Used as a translation practice material, this text contains a large amount of professional vocabulary in the fields of educational technology as well as computer science, with a clear and logical structure.According to Katherina Reiss’ s text typology theory,it can be classified as an informative text.In view of the difficulties encountered in the translation process of the informative text, the translator gives examples from three aspects: vocabulary, syntax, and discourse. At the lexical level,in order to accurately convey the content of specialized terms and disciplinary vocabulary, the translator adopts translation methods such as annotation and conversion method. At the syntactic level,on the basis of obtaining the accurate meaning of each sentence, the translator uses techniques such as sequence adjustment and subject conversion to make the translation clearly convey the information of the original text.At the discourse level, the translator employs reference, substitution, and other cohesive devices to achieve cohesion and coherence in the text referring to the context.Through this translation practice, the translator’s competence has been improved and her translation knowledge and skills have been consolidated. The translator has gained a clearer understanding of the characteristics and linguistic style of educational technology texts,as well as a further understanding of the guiding role of Reiss’ s text typology theory on the translation of the informative text.Besides, the translator hopes to provide some teaching strategies for teachers engaged in virtual teaching,so as to promote online education in China.
