A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Online Novel Omnipotent Sage

Since the beginning of the 21 st century,the concept of cultural communication in China has been constantly strengthened and with the continuous development of translation websites,Chinese online literary works also begin to seek recognition in the realm of world literature.Therefore,more and more people pay heed to the translation quality of online novels.Based on the C-E translation of the online novel Omnipotent Sage,this practice report makes a detailed analysis of the difficulties that the author encountered in the translation process,which include: 1)the translation of culture-loaded words,such as ecological culture-loaded words,material culture-loaded words,social culture-loaded words and religious culture-loaded words;2)the translation of figures of speech,such as simile,metaphor,and hyperbole;3)the translation of kungfu scenes.According to Peter Newmark’s text typology,this online novel is a mixed type of expressive text and vocative text,so both semantic translation and communicative translation are suitable to resolve the difficulties.To be specific,semantic translation and communicative translation are combined to translate culture-loaded words and the specific translation methods include free translation,substitution,as well as transliteration plus annotation;semantic translation and communicative translation are combined to translate figures of speech and the specific translation methods include free translation and literal translation;communicative translation is adopted to translate kungfu scenes and the specific translation methods include division and combination.The author hopes that this practice report can provide a reference for future translators in this field.
