As a great philosopher and aesthete in the history of Western philosophy from German classical rationalism to modern irrationalism,Artur Schopenhauer’s ideas had a profound impact on later philosophical circles,as the beginning and important representative of voluntarism,he broke the traditional paradigm of philosophy at that time with irrationalist philosophy.Schopenhauer’s philosophy of life has a strong pessimism and nihilism, and Russell claims that Schopenhauer’s pessimism changed the temperament of Western philosophy.Pessimism,as the core of Schopenhauer’s thought, starts from ontology, believes that the will is a ubiquitous force, constantly pursuing the desires and impulses of the self, and concludes that life swings between pain and boredom like a pendulum;Pain when desires are not satisfied, boredom when desires are satisfied. This paper examines the pessimistic philosophy of the German philosopher Schopenhauer. At the core of Schopenhauer’s philosophical thought is a metaphysical system with the will as the ontology, the idea as the intermediate level, and the object as the representation, and emphasizes the subjectivity of the cognitive subject and the motivation of the volitional subject. The subjectivity of the will enables the will to know things, but cannot itself be cognized, while motivation shows the blindness and impulsiveness of the will and its lack of logical rationality. The ontology of the world in his theoretical system is the blind will to live, and man is driven by the blind will to live;therefore,Schopenhauer’s ethics presents a certain pessimistic color, and man is essentially an egoist, while morality is formed based on compassion.Schopenhauer proposes to dissipate the effects of pessimism through both artistic aesthetics and the negation of the will.Although Schopenhauer’s idea of pessimism is full of negativity and suffering,it is significant for human beings to reflect on themselves. It should be pointed out that Schopenhauer’s pessimism is not a negative and decadent philosophy, but a critical reflection on the nature of life and the real world, and a wise pessimism with philosophical implications. |
