Translation Of Multiple-modification Nominal Structures In Legal Academic Texts

The thesis is a translation report based on the E-C Translation of Law,Language,and Knowledge: Legal Transplants from a Cultural Perspective,a legal academic article.Centered around the subject of “legal transplant”,the ST delves into the feasibility of legal transplant,pointing out that apart from the shift of legislative clauses and regulations from original legal texts,more attention is demanded in terms of the whole social background hidden behind legal institutions,historical conventions and the core value system.The ST falls into the category of informative text as the statement features logical analyses of facts,precise employment of words and a vast array of buttressing details,harnessing linguistic,philosophical and anthropological terms.In light of the text type,the author is supposed to prioritize the faithful delivery of the content of the ST to achieve semantic equivalence while ensuring fluency in the TT.Nevertheless,during the translation process,the main problem derives from multiple-modification nominal structures.First,how should ambiguous words in multiple-modification nominal structures be translated into clear definitions? Second,how should the author deal with the translation challenges produced by syntactic ambiguity when several multiplemodification nominal structures are nested in a sentence?With the mentioned questions in mind,the author summarizes two translation methods based on the translation practice,namely,addition and conversion.The former comprises the repetition of head nouns and the supplement of transition words.The latter refers to both conversion of part of speech and conversion of sentence components.Conversion enables the fluent transformation and smooth connection among numerous multiple-modification nominal structures in a sentence,while addition facilitates the clear translation within each and every multiple-modification nominal structure.This report is supposed to provide some guidelines for translating multiple-modification nominal structure in legal texts in the future.
