A Report On C-E Translation Of Political And Economic News From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In recent years,the increasing development of China’s economy and its enlarging international influence have made it necessary to effectively introduce China’s economic and political policies to foreign readers.It is in this context that the English translation of political and economic news plays an essential part in the exchange of international information,and higher requirements of its translation quality also become a must.However,the translation of these news texts is challenged by difficulties in linguistic and cultural differences between China and the West as well as the wide use of expressions with Chinese characteristics.As a result,some translations are difficult for the target language readers to understand and may even cause misunderstanding.The content of political and economic news is mainly about some economic and political policies of central and local governments,and the main purpose of its translation is to explain these policies to the target language readers in terms of international publicity.It is widely noticed that as an important means of government publicity,the translation of political and economic news is an act with clear purposes.Thus,based on the project of translating political and economic news of Fuzhou Municipal Government that the author participated in,the translator analyzes the translation methods adopted in translation under the guidance of Skopos Theory,and explores the ways to achieve the readability of translated texts,acceptability of target language readers and cultural intelligibility in the process of overseas promotion.This report is composed of five chapters: In chapter one,the translator elaborates on the source,content,requirements of the project and the reasons and significance of choosing political and economic news as the research object.The second chapter describes the whole translation procedures in detail,including three parts: translation preparation,translation process and translation assessment.The third chapter introduces the theoretical framework based on Skopos Theory,and elaborates on the Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule of Skopos Theory.In Chapter four,the author analyzes the problems encountered in the process of translation and explains the translation methods adopted under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Chapter five summarizes the whole translation process,and reflects on the advantages and disadvantages of Skopos Theory to guide political and economic news translation,hoping to provide reference for future political and economic news translation practice.It has been proved that Skopos Theory is conducive to the practice of political and economic news translation and can help translators analyze and select translation methods which could facilitate target readers’ understanding and reception of the translated news.It is also argued that translation under the guidance of Skopos Theory can help the translator to achieve the expected effect of news dissemination,which may promote foreign readers’ understanding of Chinese economic and political policies,build a good image of China and its local governments,and provide a certain reference for future political and economic news translation.
