Abstract/Summary:
Students’ learning has long been a focus of the nation and society. With the advent of the positive psychology boom, there has been a gradual increase in research addressing academic engagement as opposed to negative academic performance such as academic procrastination and academic burnout.Research has found that high school students’ selfesteem and personal growth initiative are closely related to learning engagement. However, the specific mechanisms that influence these three factors and the role of personal growth initiative in self-esteem and academic engagement have been less explored.Based on the Conservation of Resources Theory(COR),this study aims to explore the influence of selfesteem on learning engagement and the mediating role of personal growth initiative among high school students in China. On this basis,a group intervention program was developed to intervene the personal growth initiative of high school students with the aim of improving it and then make their learning.engagement better. This study consists of two sub-studies:In Study 1,with 700 students from grade 10 to grade 11 in a high school in Hubei Province,a questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the effect of self-esteem on learning engagement and the mediating role of personal growth initiative. The results found that the mediating effect of personal growth initiative was significant and that selfesteem could have an indirect effect on learning engagement by affecting the level of personal growth initiative.Based on Study 1,Study 2 employed experimental method, selecting 20 participants with low scores in self-esteem,personal growth initiative and learning engagement. And they were assigned to the experimental group and the control group at random, with 10 participants in each. The experimental group received group counseling(seven sessions)about personal growth initiative, while the control group did not received any treatment.A repeated measures ANOVA was used to test the data from the two groups to examine the intervention effects of group counseling. The results showed that after the intervention, the level of personal growth initiative and learning engagement of the experimental group were improved and significantly higher than those of the control group,in which there was no significant change. In summary, the conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)There is a significant and positive correlation among high school students’ selfesteem, personal growth initiative and learning engagement.(2)High school students’ self-esteem is a significant and positive predictor of their personal growth initiative and learning engagement;personal growth initiative significantly and positively predicts learning engagement.(3)Personal growth initiative partially mediates the effect of self-esteem on learning engagement in high school students.(4)Group counseling with the content of enhancing personal growth initiative can effectively develop personal growth initiative of high school students, which in turn can promote their engagement in learning.
