With the introduction of the "double reduction" policy,the excessive burden of students’ school work has become a hot topic of discussion in the education field and society,and the issue of homework has attracted much attention.As an important part of English teaching,English homework supplements and extends English teaching.Not only does it help students to consolidate their knowledge and develop their skills,it is also an important channel for teachers to obtain feedback from students.It is therefore a major challenge for teachers to design high-quality and effective English homework.The famous psychologist Howard Gardner put forward Multiple Intelligences Theory,which advocates that teaching should be student-centred,develop students’ potential and promote their diversity and individual development.Based on Multiple Intelligences Theory,the design of English homework needs to focus on developing students’ multidimensional abilities,respecting individual differences and achieving diversified development of students’ intelligence.This study combines quantitative and qualitative analyses and uses an experimental method with three research tools: questionnaires,interviews and tests.80 students from two parallel classes of Grade Seven at Hainan Overseas Chinese Middle School(Meilisha Campus)in Haikou City,of which Class 12 is the experimental class and Class 3 is the control class,are the subjects of the study.In the two-month experiment,the teachers implemented the Multiple-IntelligencesTheory-based English assignments in the experimental class,while the control class used traditional assignments.Data were collected before and after the experiment,and collated,compared and analysed.The purpose of this study is to discuss the following questions based on the Multiple Intelligences Theory of homework design and practice in actual teaching.(1)Can the design of English homework based on Multiple Intelligences Theory promote changes in the current status of English homework?(2)Can the design of English homework based on Multiple Intelligences Theory change junior high school students’ attitude towards homework and increase their interest in learning?(3)Can the design of English homework based on Multiple Intelligences Theory improve students’ English performance and grades?This study uses SPSS to conduct statistical analysis of the data and finally concludes that the design of English homework based on Multiple Intelligences Theory improves the single and tedious traditional homework and enriches the types and contents of homework.Diversified English homework is conducive to motivating students’ interest and enthusiasm in English homework and improving their attitudes towards English homework,thus contributing to effective English learning and the achievement of improved English grades.The findings reveal that teachers should be aware of the problems in the current homework design,strengthen the diversity and personalisation of English homework design,pay attention to the development of students’ multiple intelligences,and effectively bring into play the key role of the homework link in teaching and learning.
