With the ever-growing influence of China on the international stage for the past two decades, there is an urgent need for Chinese culture to “go global”.More and more works of Chinese writers have been translated overseas, and the Tibetan writer Alai is one of them.Chen Ai Luo Ding is Alai’s first full-length novel, published by the People’s Literature Publishing House in 1998.In 2002,the English version Red Poppies came out.It was cotranslated by the famous translators Howard Goldblatt and Sylvia Li-Chun Lin and was published by Houghton Mifflin Company, and it has attracted widespread attention in the English-speaking world. However,at present, there is little research that explores the English version Red Poppies, still less that analyzes the dissemination and acceptance of the translation overseas from the perspective of the medio-translatology.In view of this, the present study, with medio-translatology as the theoretical basis and 5 elements of translation and communication model proposed by Bao Xiaoying as the research perspective, explores the translation and dissemination of Red Poppies in Britain and the United States. The study examines the translation of the novel on the one hand, and also analyzes the dissemination channels, the target readership and the dissemination effect on the other hand. The present study aims to sum up the experience and demerits of its dissemination in an effort to provide useful reference for the overseas communication of Chinese literature in the future. The present study finds that,in the aspect of translation, the translators always put the target readers’ reading habits and the translated work’s acceptability in the first place;besides, they also lay stress on the faithful representation of some representative Tibetan cultural elements. While in the aspect of dissemination, the dissemination effect of Red Poppies in the UK and the US is on the whole satisfactory. The translation is only the first step in the process of bringing a nation’s translated literary works abroad. The effect of dissemination is closely linked to the means of publicity that follow the translation. The support of first-class publishers, the introductory articles of the mass media and the distribution of online bookstores are all essential means of disseminating translated literature effectively. In addition, the research and discussion of translated literature by experts and scholars may convert some of the potential receptors into de facto target readers, while the online reviews and feedback of ordinary readers are also helpful for the dissemination of translated literature.
