The stone carving materials mainly include epitaphs and Buddhist stone carvings, and the study of the language, history, geography, political culture and other contents reflected in them is of great benefit to exploring the social and linguistic outlook of the era.The stone carvings of the Sui Dynasty have been buried underground for a long time, and difficult words and complicated allusions hinder the accurate understanding of the content of the stone carvings, the stone carving materials are difficult to do their best.Although the academic community has begun to study stone carving materials,it focuses on history, calligraphy, writing, etc.,the systematic research in the field of stone carving linguistics is quite poor, and word interpretation needs to be strengthened. This paper selects the stone carving materials from the eleventh year of Kaihuang to the fourth year of Renshou in the Sui Emperor as the research object, and takes The Sui Dynasty Epitaph Examination as the main research corpus to systematically study and analyze the hidden words and allusions in the Sui Dynasty stone carvings. The article is divided into four parts. The first chapter is introduction, which mainly introduces the research object, the history and current situation of related research, research methods, and research value. The second chapter,“Interpretation of Difficult Words Carved in Stone from the eleventh year of Kaihuang to the fourth year of Renshou in the Sui Emperor”,is divided into two parts: general words and allusion words, and the meaning of words is sorted out and summarized through the collection and analysis of excavated documents and handed down documents. The third chapter,“The Value of Stone Inscribed Words from the Eleventh Year of Kaihuang to the Fourth Year of Renshou in the Sui Emperor to the Compilation of The great Chinese Dictionary”,provides assistance for the improvement of the content and style of The great Chinese Dictionary from five aspects: supplementing missing words, supplementing missing terms, supplementing different graphic of one word, era of early examples, and supplementing word examples. The fourth chapter,“The Research on Stone Allusions from the Eleventh Year of Kaihuang to the Fourth Years of Renshou in the Sui Emperor”,summarizes the allusions used from three aspects:tracing the names of the ancestors of the epitaph owner, describing the epitaph owner’s talent and virtue, and describing the death of the epitaph owner. Finally, this thesis compiles the results of the words check, interpretation and research into a chart named “The glossary of the stone inscriptions words from the Eleventh Year of Kaihuang to the Fourth Year of Renshou in the Sui Emperor”,which is attached at the end of the thesis.
