A Study On The Subjective Evaluation Construction Of "X Yao Bu Yao Zhe Me Y"

The "X Yaobuyaozheme Y" construction is frequently seen on the Internet and in everyday life as an emerging colloquial expression,and it has become a popular construction.What are the reasons behind the emergence of any new linguistic phenomenon,what are the reasons for its popularity? What is the meaning of this construction? What are the characteristics of its constituents ? What are the syntactic functions of the construction? How is the construction formed? What are the motives and mechanisms of its formation? Based on the above questions,this thesis takes the construct as the object of study,analyzes the meaning of the construct and the semantic features of its components,examines its syntactic and pragmatic features,and explores its evolution process as well as the motivation and mechanism of its formation by combining the specific corpus.Thus this thesis is divided into six parts :The first introductory chapter introduces the object,content and significance of this thesis,briefly reviews the current status of related research,and explains the research method and corpus sources used in this thesis.The second chapter identifies and analyzes the meaning of the construct "X Yaobuyaozheme Y".Firstly,it is identified as a semi-fixed schematic construction according to Goldberg’s cognitive construction grammar;secondly,the semantic features of the constants in the construction are analyzed,and it is found that "Yaobuyao" is a grammatical marker of emphasis in the construction,the speaker’s point of "Yao" is "to be,should be",and "Zheme" contains a semantic feature of[+comparison];Finally,we summarize the meaning of the construct and its semantic features,and conclude that the construct is a subjective over-evaluation made by the speaker who thinks that the trait degree of someone or something exceeds the psychological expectation,which can be divided into positive over-evaluation and negative over-evaluation according to whether the trait degree of the objective thing is in the direction of the speaker’s expectation.This construction is accompanied by the speaker’s strong subjective emotion,and has the semantic characteristics of subjective color meaning,super-measure degree meaning and evaluation judgment meaning.Chapter 3 presents a syntactic analysis of the "X Yaobuyaozheme Y" construction.This chapter analyzes the syntactic features of the "variable X" and the "variable Y" in the construction,and finds that the variable X is mainly filled by nouns and pronouns,and a few verbs can also enter,while the variable Y is mainly filled by adjectives,verbs and nouns with the sense of degree of disposition.The chapter also examines the syntactic function of this construction,making it clear that it can serve as a predicate,a complement,a gerund,a clause of a compound sentence,and an independent sentence.Chapter 4 presents a pragmatic analysis of the "X Yaobuyaozheme Y" construction,which is explained in three aspects: the applicable context,the pragmatic function,and the pragmatic rationale.The most appropriate discourse context for the construction is the amount of super-psychological normality,and the most appropriate tone is the exclamatory tone;the construction has various discourse functions such as emphasis,subjective evaluation and meta-linguistic increment;the discourse justifications for the construction include the principles of cooperation and politeness,the principle of economy and people’s creative psychology.Chapter 5 analyzes the formation process,motivation and mechanism of the "X Yaobuyaozheme Y" construct.The formation of this construct undergoes three transformation processes,and its function evolves from question to rhetorical question and finally to exclamation.By comparing and analyzing the changes of the constants and variables in the structure,we find that the superficial motive of the transformation is the change of "Y",which will affect "Zheme Y",and the change of "Zheme Y " will further affect the function of "Yaobuyao",so that the questioning function of the structure will be weakened and the evaluation function will be highlighted,gradually developing into a subjective evaluation construct.Therefore,the motivation for the formation of the construction is the change in the context of the language,which transforms the syntactic function of the sentence from question to exclamation,and the mechanism of the formation is the metaphor of "variable Y",the metonymy of "Zheme Y",the semantic fiction and reanalysis of "Yaobuyao",and the the expansion of subject X.The concluding section in Chapter 6 summarizes the research of this thesis,points out the shortcomings of this thesis and identifies the issues to be further explored.
