Academic procrastination is a hot topic in the field of independent learning research in recent years, and the academic procrastination of college students is a focus of research in the related field. The development of social networks and the complexity of online information have made social networks the main tool for interpersonal communication and interaction in today’s society, and the poor use of social networks by college students,as the main force of social network use,has reflected many psychological and physical problems.Fear of missing out is a diffuse anxiety generated by individuals who worry about missing out on some valuable information to the detriment of their own relevant interests. In today’s context, many studies have demonstrated that the fear of missing out is closely related to social network addiction, but less research has been conducted on the impact of the fear of missing out on academics among college students, and it is worth exploring what role social network addiction plays in the relationship between the two,and whether other factors play an important role in it.Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to examine the relationship between fear of missing out and academic procrastination in the context of the widespread use of social networks, and explore the internal mechanisms of social network addiction and basic psychological needs as mediators. The study used questionnaires to explore the relationship between fear of missing out, social network addiction, basic psychological needs satisfaction, and academic procrastination, and further explored the chain mediating effects of social network addiction and basic psychological needs.By analyzing the correlation and mediating effects on data from 492 enrolled college students, the results of the study found that:(1)The fear of missing out is positively correlated with social network addiction and academic procrastination, and negatively correlated with basic psychological needs.Social network addiction is positively correlated with academic procrastination, while basic psychological needs are negatively correlated with academic procrastination.(2)There were significant differences in fear of missing out on grade, major, and whether or not the student was an only child.First-year and fourth-year undergraduates had significantly higher levels of fear of missing out than second-year undergraduates and graduate students.Secondly,in the overall year grouping, fourth year undergraduates had the highest levels of fear of missing out, while postgraduates had the lowest levels of fear of missing out.Science and engineering students had higher levels of fear of missing out than arts students.Only children had higher levels of misplaced fear than non-only children.(3)There were significant differences in social network addiction by grade level and parenting style.Fourth-year undergraduates had the highest level of social network addiction, significantly higher than students in other grades, while second-year undergraduates showed the lowest level of social network addiction in the overall grade group.Students with a permissive parenting style had significantly higher levels of social network addiction than those with a democratic parenting style.(4)There were significant differences in basic psychological needs in terms of parenting style.Students with a democratic parenting style had significantly higher levels of basic psychological needs than students with an authoritative parenting style.(5)Academic procrastination has no significant difference in all demographic variables.(6)The social network addiction plays a mediating role between fear of loss and academic procrastination.(7)The social network addiction and basic psychological needs play a complete mediating role in the chain mediating effect of fear of missing out on academic procrastination. In summary, this study enriches the research related to academic procrastination from a practical problem. It demonstrates that the fear of missing out has an impact on academic procrastination among college students, and that social network addiction and basic psychological needs play a chain mediating role in the relationship between the two.
