As one of the most important writers of the Taisho period in Japan,Akutagawa Ryunosuke devoted himself to the emerging trend of I-novel creation in the late period of his creation.Between 1922 and 1927,he wrote more than 20 I-novels.Akutagawa’s I-novel creation is not accomplished overnight, but has experienced a process from immature to mature, which can be roughly divided into three stages. In the first stage of Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s I-novel creation,he turned from the historical novels which had been well received by the literary circle to I-novels.Based on his experience in the naval Academy,he wrote a number of short stories with "Horikawa Boyoshi" as the protagonist. In these novels, the author has rejected the "confession" of I-novel,and although he has already reflected the awakening of selfconsciousness,he still stays in the superficial description of external action. At this time, the protagonist "I" in the work is a soulless false "I",which cannot show the author’s deepest self state.Akutagawa’s self-disclosure in this period of I-novel is not complete. In the second stage of Akutagawa’s I-novel creation, his writing style changed greatly, and he took the initiative to devote himself to the "confession" of I-novel.He began to face his inner fear of the class of origin and the family of origin, and no longer made an ambiguous "confession",but began to reflect on his personal character defects in view of his own trauma.During this period,Akutagawa created a series of autobiographical I-novels,which revealed the pain of lack of companionship in childhood and the estrangment from his birth mother and father, and created an image of "I" who faced the reality and dared to criticize his own bad habits.Akutagawa’s Inovels at this stage mainly focus on the memories of the past pain and the memory of his loved ones, which can be seen in his complex mother complex, and the great influence of his birth mother on his life. The last half year of Akutagawa’s life was the third phase of his I-novel.During this period,Akutagawa’s self-consciousness was maximized in his I-novels,and the skills and connotations of I-novels reached their peak.In terms of technique,he sought out the closest thing to art in his mind, the novel without a proper "story".In this work, the creative methods such as image, time dilution and space narration are skillfully used to highlight the worries about the predicament of survival and the thoughts of death relief, which completely shows the mental and physical collapse of Akutagawa before he committed suicide. In the novel, the author’s self-consciousness manifests itself to the greatest extent in a way that seems chaotic and disorderly on the surface, but in fact is very powerful, successfully shaping a completely reflective "I".Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s I-novel creation has experienced several developments and changes, but he is always persistent in the innovation of artistic skills, calm thinking throughout,so that the late works show a kind of rational madness. In contrast to other self-fiction writers of his time,Akutagawa’s I-novel ultimately achieves a perfect fusion of skill and self-awareness.Through the "confession" of I-novels,Akutagawa achieved a clear understanding and deep reflection on himself and The Times.
