The "painting within a painting" is a very clever and unique conceptual method in the history of Western painting.Since its birth in the Netherland during the Renaissance, there have been various forms of "painting within a painting" that have played an important role in the construction of the picture."The painting-in-picture" has gone through two peak periods of development, from the early Renaissance to the Baroque period and from Impressionism to the present, but it did not receive much attention until the "meta-art" movement that emerged in the 1960 s and the 1990 s.The rise of "meta-painting" theory, represented by Daniel Arras and Stoichita, who studied Western painting, and Wu Hong, who studied Chinese painting. It can also be traced back to the article "Painting within a Painting" published by André Chasdelle in the 1970 s and included in the second volume of "Legend,Form,Image".At present, domestic studies on "painting within painting" are more often analyzed from individual cases of painters, without a general grasp of the formation and development of "painting within a painting" and the rich expressions presented in different pictures in different periods. The author believes that "painting within a painting" appears so frequently in traditional Western oil painting and has such a rich expression that it should be studied from a variety of perspectives.By going back to the "original canon",the author explores the form and meaning of the unique concept of "painting within a painting".This paper compares the use of "painting within a painting" by painters of different art schools in different periods of time, and compares the formal role of "painting within a painting" in presenting the space of the picture and the expression of the connotation of the picture,as well as the transmission of the painter’s self-awareness.
