As a kiln mouth with a long history in China,Yuezhou Kiln originated in the Eastern Han Dynasty and flourished in the Tang Dynasty.It was one of the six famous kilns in China during the Tang Dynasty and had a profound impact on the history of ceramics in China.In addition to producing a large number of daily utensils,it has also found a considerable number of character figurines fired from the Yuezhou kiln in modern unearthed ancient tombs.These figurines are not the main ceramics produced by Yuezhou Kiln,and the number of figurines is much smaller than that of daily ceramics.However,the figurines produced by Yuezhou Kiln still have their own unique characteristics.By collecting the number of Yuezhou kiln figurines exhibited in museums in Changsha and Yueyang regions,the author found that the number of character figurines in Yuezhou kiln during the Sui and Tang dynasties was considerable,with unique shapes and decorations,which were somewhat different from common figurines in the northern region during the Sui and Tang dynasties.Therefore,the author believes that the character figurines of Yuezhou Kiln in the Sui and Tang dynasties are worth conducting in-depth research.The article takes the figure figurines of Yuezhou Kiln during the Sui and Tang dynasties as the research object.Through literature review and collection,visits to relevant museums and kiln entrances of Yuezhou Kiln,and interviews with inheritors of intangible cultural heritage of Yuezhou Kiln and experts in the production of figure figurines in Hunan region,relevant data on Yuezhou Kiln figure figurines are obtained for research and analysis of shaping and decoration techniques.The article begins by analyzing the natural environment and social ecology of the production of figure figurines in Yuezhou Kiln,summarizing the historical background of Yuezhou Kiln,as well as the historical development of the shaping and decoration techniques of figure figurines in Yuezhou Kiln.The second part of the article analyzes the molding process of character figurines produced in Yuezhou Kiln during the Sui and Tang dynasties.By observing their internal structure and surface characteristics,and combining relevant information on character figurine molding,it is concluded that there are three types of character figurines produced in Yuezhou Kiln during the Sui and Tang dynasties:kneading molding,mold molding,and the combination of kneading and mold molding.The different molding processes are classified and analyzed.The third part of the article discusses the decorative techniques of character figurines.Based on the characteristics of the appearance decoration of character figurines,the author classifies and analyzes three aspects of character figurines in the Yuezhou Kiln of Sui and Tang dynasties: first,figurines decorated with carving techniques,second,glazed figurines,and third,figurines decorated with plain pottery.In the fourth part,the author summarized the characteristics of the small and elegant figure figurines of Yuezhou Kiln in the Sui and Tang dynasties,the combination of hardness and softness,and the atmospheric and simple glaze,and combined them with personal feelings to draw inspiration and apply in the creative process.The article systematically collects and organizes the figure figurines of Yuezhou Kiln in the Sui and Tang dynasties,and conducts in-depth analysis and research on the shaping and decoration techniques of the figure figurines of Yuezhou Kiln in the Sui and Tang dynasties.This not only increases the understanding of Yuezhou Kiln,but also increases the possibility of studying Ming ware figurines,providing some reference significance for modern artists to draw experience from traditional Chinese art in their artistic creation.
