Yuezhou,which is nurtured by the Dongting Lake,has beautiful mountains,lakes and stunning natural scenery,and Yueyang Tower,which is known as the first of the "Three Famous Buildings in Jiangnan",is located on the shore of the Dongting Lake,attracting many scholars and poets to come here to write poems and folklore.Many literati were relegated to or passed through Yuezhou,and the relegated writers composed poems here.These poems contain profound spiritual connotations,and their literary value and artistic achievements have been recognised by the world over the course of time,making the study of literary creation in Yuezhou during the Tang dynasty of great significance to the development of Tang literature.This paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter compares the history of Yuezhou from the Qin Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties,outlines the landscape features of Yuezhou and the climatic characteristics of the four seasons,and summarises the cultural characteristics of Yuezhou in the Tang Dynasty,which were far from ancient political centres,full of ancient legends and myths,and with a patriotic sentiment for the world at heart,thus demonstrating that Yuezhou’s beautiful natural scenery and deep historical heritage provided a rich basis for the poets who came to Yuezhou.Chapter 2 analyses the poetry of Yuezhou in the Tang dynasty and the poets of Yuezhou.By analysing the reasons for the poets’ involvement in Yuezhou,this chapter divides the poets who came to Yuezhou into relegated poets,wandering poets,official poets and local poets,and selects important poets for specific analysis.Chapter 3 divides Yuezhou poetry in the Tang dynasty into four main categories according to their subject matter: landscape poetry,poetry of relegation,poetry of farewell,and political poetry,and the number of poems in these four categories in Yuezhou poetry in the Tang dynasty is considerable,facilitating a more in-depth and detailed exploration and analysis of Yuezhou poetry.The fourth chapter focuses on the recurrence of images in the poems that are also characteristic of Yuezhou,including the sad and mournful ’Qu Yuan Jia Yi’,the ’ape cry’,the ’Xiang Fei’,and the ’transcendent and unrestrained’ images."It also analyses the regional colours of Yuezhou’s poetry in terms of both its products and folklore.The fifth chapter takes Zhang Yao,a relegated poet from Yuezhou with a large number of surviving poems and a rich life history,as a case study.It analyses Zhang Yao’s life,divides the content of his relegation poems into three parts: describing the landscape of Yuezhou,expressing his longing for the imperial court,and expressing his desire to live in seclusion. |
