Eric Rohmer is one of the founders of the French "New Wave" cinema, and is one of the masters of international cinema with his three series "Six Moral Tales","Comedy and Proverbs" and "Tales of the Four Seasons"."In 2001,he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the 58 th Venice International Film Festival.Throughout his works,Rohmer often takes the morality and emotion of modern French urbanites as the theme of his films.Through documentary shots and the natural beauty of the soundtrack and lines,he portrays the anxiety and uneasiness of intellectuals in modern society,as well as their close observation and analysis of the world, showing a strong authorial attribute.Although Rohmer has won many awards and is highly respected in the international film industry, there are few systematic studies on Rohmer in the field of aesthetics in China, and few people have paid attention to this modern film author, leaving many theoretical gaps to be filled in the field of academic research. Therefore, this thesis will focus on three of Rohmer’s major series of works, using aesthetics, cinematography, narrative theory and other related theories to explore the aesthetic characteristics of his films. The thesis examines the aesthetic characteristics of Eric Rohmer’s films through five chapters, mainly focusing on the thematic connotation, narrative, and audiovisual language of the films. The first chapter is the introduction, which explains the background and significance of the selected topic, the current status of research on Eric Rohmer’s major works at home and abroad, and the content and methodology of the thesis. The second chapter is an overview of Eric Rohmer’s major works, introducing the director’s experience and the creation of three series of films from the background of his growth. The third chapter analyzes the importance of the aesthetic characteristics of the themes in Hume’s films, starting from the themes of "morality and emotion" and "respect for humanity, truth as beauty".Chapter four focuses on narrative, combining the film’s non-linear narrative and atypical characterization methods. The fifth chapter focuses on the audiovisual language of Eric Rohmer’s films. The camera language that conveys the documentary nature of modern life and the off-camera voices and lines that aim to explore the poetic nature of everyday life show the high aesthetic value of the films.Through the analysis and discussion of the aesthetic characteristics of Eric Rohmer’s films,we hope to provide some reference to the theoretical study of Chinese art films, and to highlight the significance and value of aesthetics in the current wave of cinematic worship of technicality.
