Fang Yizhi was a monk with the Chinese name of Mi Zhi,Man Gong, and Fushan Yug;after he became a monk, his legal name was Hong Zhi and Wu Ke etc.He was a native of Tongcheng,Anhui Province.Fang Yizhi was a great thinker, scientist, literary scholar and calligrapher in the 17 th century in China.Fang Yizhi lived in an era of social turmoil, and on the one hand,he lived in the midst of turmoil and struggled to keep his reputation, while on the other hand, with his spirit of continuous exploration,he roamed the academic world, which provided him with a wide range of subjects and conditions for the creation of his calligraphy.Since Fang Yizhi’s influence in the fields of philosophy, science, literature, and phonetics has greatly overshadowed his achievements in calligraphy, this paper will explore Fang Yizhi’s calligraphy and his conception of calligraphy in order to discover the theoretical value and relevance of Fang Yizhi’s calligraphy. This paper begins with the background of the study, describes the current status of research related to Fang Yizhi’s calligraphy, indicates the purpose and significance of studying Fang Yizhi’s calligraphy, and clarifies the research ideas and methods.Since the current academic research on Fang Yizhi’s calligraphy is not comprehensive enough,it is worth exploring. The second is an exposition of Fang Yizhi’s life and calligraphic history, with the intention of pointing out the profound influence of the Fang family’s family roots on Fang Yizhi’s lifelong academic research, including calligraphy,as well as the calligraphic concepts and ideas in Fang Yizhi’s writings. As for the study of Fang Yizhi’s calligraphic characteristics, his calligraphic style is analyzed in detail from three aspects: running script, cursive script, and regular script, taking Fang Yizhi’s own calligraphic works as examples. The investigation of the causes of his calligraphic style is divided into two aspects: on the one hand, his exploration of the study of monuments and posters, and on the other hand, his unique concept of calligraphic creation, which together support the formation of Fang Yizhi’s calligraphic style. This is followed by an exploration of the calligraphic concepts presented in Fang Yizhi’s Tong Ya: first,an insight into the ancient methods of using characters in the seal script and the prescript, second,a discussion of calligraphic tools, third,an exposition of the origins of seals and the beginnings of epigraphy, fourth,an exploration of the influence of seals on calligraphic style, fifth,a related discussion of inscriptions on ancient bronzes and stone tablets, and sixth,an analysis of the relationship between calligraphy and ancient books. Finally,it shows the theoretical value and practical significance of the calligraphy shown by Fang Yizhi. The theoretical value provides a reference for evaluating ancient calligraphy and provides inspiration to future generations of scholars;the practical significance provides guidance for the author’s calligraphy practice and also provides clear inspiration for the development of contemporary calligraphy.
