Wu Xizai, as one of the most famous artists in the Qing Dynasty, made a great success from innovation based on classic Han Dynasty Stele and the essential part of Deng Shiru's art of calligraphy, stepping out of his own artistic characteristic. In terms of contemporary research on Wu Xizai, we find that there are "Two Sufficiencies, Two Rareness and Three Lacks". "Two Sufficiencies" refers to the study on the relationship between him and his master Bao Shichen with his carving achievements; "Two Rareness" contains two layers of meaning: one refers to the rareness of the study on Wu Xizai's calligraphy itself, one refers to Wu Xizai's achievements affected by other painting and calligraphy artists of bronze and stone besides Bao Shichen, such as Yao Zhengyong, Wang Yun, Cen Rong, Liu Hanchen, etc. "Three Lacks" refers to the lack of the study of his family tradition's impact on his art creation, on the process of formation of his calligraphy style, on the impact on calligraphy of later generations. This paper is based on the field research of Wu Xizai's former residence and a lot of historical data, aiming at the research status quo referred as " Two Sufficiencies, Two Rareness and Three Lacks " the,and takes a lot of work to complete, on the purpose of elaborating Wu Xizai, his art and its impact, so as to supplement the gap of calligraphy research.
