In recent years, with the continuous development of mass media, new media terms have emerged as the times require, which has also led a group of scholars to conduct various researches on them. The study of neologisms in media is not only helpful to grasp the characteristics of neologisms in media, but also can gain insight into the development of society through the exploration of neologisms in media. This paper takes 1,491 cases of new words in the media published in the "Report on Language Life in China"(2017-2021)as the research object.A detailed description and in-depth research of new words in the media. The thesis is mainly divided into the following six parts:The first part is the introduction. It mainly introduces six aspects of the research object, source of corpus, research overview of media neologisms, research significance and research methods. The second part analyzes the sources of new words in the media.Through sorting out the materials, the sources of new words in the media are divided into three aspects: newly coined words, foreign words and old words with new meanings, and these three aspects are carefully classified and analyzed from the perspectives of production methods, absorption forms, and generation mechanisms.Among them, newly coined words are the main source of new words in the media, and the ways of word creation are diverse;the number of foreign words is small, the source language is single, but the absorption forms are diverse;the old words have rich new meanings, and their meanings are constantly generalized. The third part explores the characteristics of neologisms in the media. With the help of quantitative statistical methods, analyze and study the characteristics of new words in the media in the linguistic and social fields.Among them, the characteristics of syllables are that three-syllable and four-syllable new words are dominant, and the growth of monosyllable words is slow; The quantity distribution is uneven;the meaning of words is characterized by the singleness and inclusiveness of the meaning of new words in the media. At the same time,in terms of social fields, new words in the media are widely distributed, involving 14 social fields, mainly science and technology and economics. The fourth part studies the characteristics of word groups of new words in the media.First of all, through statistics,we found that there are 32 groups of new words in the media from 2016 to 2020,and 317 words.Secondly, with the help of statistical results, the characteristics of word groups are analyzed from the two aspects of common morphemes and word groups as a whole. The common morphemes are characterized by monosyllabic common morphemes, which play rich roles and come from various sources. At the same time, word groups and common morphemes restrict each other and develop together. The position of the common morpheme has a certain influence on the part of speech of the word group, and the development of the word group will change the semantic characteristics of the common morpheme;and demonstrate the clarity of the semantics of the word group through conceptual metaphor and conceptual integration. Finally, the analysis shows that the development of word groups is mainly determined by multiple factors such as society, users, and language itself. The fifth part discusses the development trend of neologisms in the media.Draw a trend chart and analyze the trend development of coinage, syllables, word formation and social classification of new words in the media.Taking the new words in the media in 2018 as an example, draw a vitality curve and divide it into five types of curves: rising, falling, and fluctuating. At the same time,it analyzes the reasons for the unbalanced and unstable development of new words in the media from the contradictions in three aspects. The sixth part is the conclusion.Summarize the research content of this paper, point out the shortcomings of the paper, and put forward the direction of further research.
