On The E-C Translation Of Cultural Landscape Of Suzhou Classical Garden From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Spanning a period of almost one thousand years,classical gardens of Suzhou is the carriers of traditional Chinese culture due to its elegant aesthetics and delicate style.In recent years,fascinated by its uniqueness,a growing number of Westerners have shown keen interest in Chinese traditional architecture and landscape.They not only pay frequent visits to Suzhou gardens,but also introduce the artistic value of Suzhou classical gardens to the Western.However,translation on cultural landscape of Suzhou classical gardens is still in its infancy and the relevant research accounts for a relatively small proportion in the whole translation of cultural landscape of Suzhou classical gardens.Therefore,how to convey the inner beauty of Suzhou gardens through translation has become a significant research topic.Based on the German Functionalist Translation Theory and its three core principles,Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule and taking Tong Ming’s translation as the research corpus,this thesis aims to study how the translation of Glimpses of Gardens in Eastern China combines the cultural background and idiomatic expressions of the targeted readers in order to achieve readability and the purpose cultural dissemination.The results show that,in the level of stylistic features,the translator translates the original text into parallel prose,which conforms with the reading habit of targeted readers and reflects the fidelity rule.In the level of translation strategy,the translator mainly adopts domestication,which accurately produces the cultural connotations of original text in a much more acceptable way.In the level of translation techniques,the translator employs free translation,sentence restructuring addition and variation to achieve the purpose of disseminating Suzhou garden culture.To sum up,Skopos theory has great explanatory power when it is applied to the translation on cultural landscape of Suzhou classical gardens and the present study is of great importance to cultural landscape of Suzhou classical gardens and the adaptability of Skopos theory.
