An E-C Translation Report On NBA News From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

With high-tech support,the National Basketball Association(NBA)has gained numerous fans and a vast market in China.In this process,translation plays a crucial role.As a globally renowned basketball league,the NBA cannot develop and grow without the help of the news.However,there needs to be more research on NBA news translation in China,so the authors chose NBA news as the source text of this translation practice.This report selects 15 NBA news articles for translation practice.These news reports cover the hot events of the 2021-2022 season.The NBA news language has distinct characteristics.Small words,numbers,professional words,and compound words are used to achieve simplicity.Long sentences are applied to convey a large amount of information and restore the original situation of the game.Colloquial texts and idioms are adopted to highlight the humorous linguistic style of NBA news.Throughout translation practice,adaptation theory plays a crucial role in understanding the source text and translation,as well as in selecting translation techniques.This report summarizes the translation techniques of NBA news through case analysis from four aspects of adaptation theory.At the aspect of structural objects of adaptability,extension,division,paraphrase,and reconstruction are used to adapt to the target language’s structure.At the aspect of contextual correlates of adaptability,equivalence,adding background information,and free translation are employed to compensate for the differences in the mental,physical,and social worlds between the two languages.At the aspect of dynamics of adaptability,substitution is adopted to reflect the dynamic development of language.At the aspect of salience of adaptation processes,paraphrase and free translation are applied to embody the translator’s subjectivity during translation.
