Research On National Image In The Intermediate And Advanced Textbooks Of Boya Chinese

Abstract/Summary:
With the in-depth development of globalization,China’s communication with the world has increased significantly,the building and spreading of the national image has received widespread attention.International Chinese Language Education undertakes the dual missions of teaching Chinese and spreading Chinese culture.As the main carrier of International Chinese Language Education,the textbooks for teaching Chinese as a foreign language cover various aspects of China’s politics,economy,culture,society,geography,etc.They are not only an important tool for learners to learn Chinese,but also an important medium to learn more about China,and the national image they present directly affects Chinese learners’ correct perception of China.Therefore,this paper examines and analyzes the real and multi-dimensional image of China presented in the textbooks from various perspectives.Taking the Intermediate and Advanced textbooks of Boya Chinese as the research object,and China’s national image in the textbooks as the research topic,this paper uses the inductive and statistical analysis methods to explore the multi-dimensional national image presented in the textbooks.The specific chapter settings and content arrangements are as follows:Chapter 1 is the introduction,which mainly elaborates the background,the research significance and the research status,and introduces the research object,framework and the research method.Chapter 2 explains the contemporary characteristics of China’s national image,and summarizes that the textbooks should reflect such characteristics as deep-rooted and innovative,modest and reserved,confident and open,strong,peaceful and friendly,tolerant and responsible.Chapter 3 provides statistics and analysis of the national image in the textbook,and finds that the Intermediate and Advanced textbooks of Boya Chinese present five dimensions of national image,including politics,national,culture,society,and geography,which are generally consistent with the contemporary characteristics of China’s national image.Chapter 4 summarizes the successes and shortcomings of the Intermediate and Advanced textbooks of Boya Chinese in shaping the image of China.The successes include: the period covered spans from ancient to modern times,the content presented is realistic and objective,the arrangement reflects the characteristics of gradual progress,the narrative perspective is mainly “self-building”,and the cross-cultural awareness is clear and sharp.The shortcomings include: the dimension is not comprehensive enough;there is a high repetition rate of some contents;the selection of emerging elements is insufficient.Chapter 5 puts forward relevant suggestions based on the previous research: to balance the dimensions at all levels to present a pluralistic image;to expand the international perspective based on the China’s position;to select emerging elements to prevent the thick of the past and the thin of the present.Hopefully,this paper can provide useful references for shaping national images in the textbooks for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
