Strategies For Redundancy In English-Chinese Interpretation Of Impromptu Interviews

The material selected for this simulated interpreting is an interview conducted by Joe Rogan with the famous American stand-up comedian Kevin Hart.The interview covers Kevin Hart’s attitude to life,career and recent projects,so that listeners can have a more comprehensive understanding of Kevin Hart.A large amount of redundancy appeared in the material selected for this simulated interpreting,causing challenges for the interpreting process.Based on this interview,this report is intended to explore the handling of redundancy and summarize appropriate strategies to help interpreters improve the quality of interpretation.As one of the essential attributes of language,redundancy will affect the interpreter’s interpretation quality.This report summarizes the redundancy appearing in this interview by means of a case study,and provides appropriate methods for dealing with different types of redundancy.According to the different characteristics of redundancy,this paper analyses it in terms of lexical redundancy and sentence redundancy.The lexical redundancy is mainly divided into homonym recurrence,near-synonym recurrence and filler words insertion,and the strategies of reduction and combination were adopted to deal with them;the sentence redundancy is mainly divided into utterance recurrence,information explanation and information correction,and the strategies of reduction,combination and direct translation were adopted to deal with them.This report classifies redundant information and suggests ways of dealing with it.It is hoped that this practice report can serve as a reference for other interpreters in dealing with redundancy problems in the future and as a reference for interview interpreting.
