The Analysis And Solutions Of Improper Pauses In Spanish To Chinese Consecutive Interpreting

Improper pause is one of the common forms of disfluency in the field of consecutive interpretation.This thesis is a case study based on author’s consecutive interpretation from Spanish to Chinese of the CEPAL COVID-19 Report VI: Impacts on Logistics and Trade Mock Conference.By building a bilingual corpus of the source language and the target language transcripts,the causes of improper pauses will be analyzed and corresponding coping strategies will be proposed.Based on previous studies and author’s experience,the definition and classification of improper pause are presented.The causes of improper pause mainly focus on four aspects,including poor listening comprehension,inadequate note-taking,insufficient bilingual conversion and psychological stress.Accordingly,corresponding coping strategies can be applied to reduce improper pause,such as improving listening skills,note-taking strategies,bilingual conversion and public speaking skills.It is hoped that this thesis will enrich the corpus of improper pause in the field of interpretation from Spanish to Chinese,and provide reference for further study.
