Causes Of Improper Pause And Its Coping Strategies In Consecutive Interpreting

In modern society,with the impressive speed of development,China plays an essential role in the world and has frequent and close exchanges with foreign countries in many fields,such as economy and trade,culture,science,and technology.The communication between China and foreign countries creates the market demand for interpreters.Moreover,one of the crucial criteria to judge the quality of interpreters’ interpretation is fluency.Therefore,if there are some improper pauses in the process of interpreting,which means the interpreter doesn’t interpret fluently somewhere,the quality of the interpretation will be underrated.This is the practice report on the author’s consecutive interpreting for a mini-lecture from Palmerston North Girls’ & Boys’ High Schools.Under the guidance of Gile’s Effort Models,this paper is intended to analyze and reflect on the improper pauses,i.e.,disfluency,which are involved to the following factors: 1)insufficient listening and comprehension will lead to inaccurate semantic understanding and improper pauses;2)improper notes will lead to information loss or unclear sentence structure,undermining the interpreter’s fluent utterances;3)inadequate language knowledge is the obstacle for interpreters to comprehend a discourse correctly and interpret appropriately and fluently;4)insufficient extra-linguistic knowledge will bring about difficulties in content understanding and the language organization,which will bring negative influence to language fluency;5)fragile psychological qualities will cause the imbalance of the interpreter’s energy distribution,resulting in improper pauses.Based on the above reasons,the author puts forward some coping strategies as follows: 1)to improve basic language skills,the author can take advantage of bilanguage audio materials to practice listening and comprehension,and to learn authentic expressions;2)to improve note-taking skills,the interpreter can take good use of simple and effective symbols;3)to accumulate extra-linguistic knowledge,the author should search information for the certain topic of an interpreting task and learn different fields of knowledge;4)to strengthen the psychological qualities,the interpreter should learn how to face with the audience,learn from experienced interpreters,participate in more speech competitions and enhance public speech skills.The reflection on this practice will not only lay a foundation for the author to further study and boost her interpreting ability,but also provide some reference for other interpreting learners.
