| Proper pauses in interpretation can help the interpreter to cut the flow of speech correctly and make the output more fluent and natural, but also lead to the failure to accurately convey information, cause misunderstanding of the audience, and even affect the smooth progress of the interpretation. This article takes the "36th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean" mock meeting as an example to analyze the reasons for the improper pauses and the strategies to deal with them. This paper classifies improper pauses into infilled improper pauses and filled improper pauses, which are manifested by prolonged silence and addition of meaningless filler words.By analyzing specific examples, this paper attributes the causes of improper pauses to insufficient encyclopedic knowledge, insufficient listening comprehension, low note-taking effectiveness, insufficient bilingual conversion ability, excessive pursuit of speed in translation, poor habits of language expression and poor psychological quality. In view of the above reasons, this paper suggests seven strategies for improvement, which are to make good preparation for translation, pay attention to daily accumulation, strengthen training of listening and comprehension ability, improve note-taking system, improve bilingual level and speed up bilingual conversion, give up perfectionism and train speaking rhythm, strengthen self-monitoring and evaluation, strengthen training of public speaking and improve psychological quality. It is hoped that this case study and analysis can provide a case reference for future research on improper pauses in Spanish-Chinese consecutive interpreting. |
