| Extralinguistic knowledge is of great importance in interpreting. With reference to previous thesis and academic literature, the author categorizes extralinguistic knowledge into thematic knowledge, contextual knowledge and professional knowledge. The thesis is designed to discuss problems arising from the case study, namely the interview with Bill Haseltine about Medicare in Singapore.During the interpreting, lack of extralinguistic knowledge triggered problems in three aspects: One is the negative impact on target language comprehension, including listening, distinguishing, and logical comprehension;the second is language quality, and the third is the accuracy of information processing. Finally, based on the above problems, the author discusses specific coping strategies from three states, including communication, knowledge research and data review, context analysis, adding key information,re-interpreting from Chinese to English based on notes and make a summary to improve the interpretation. This thesis probes into the common problems of lacking extralinguistic knowledge in English-Chinese interpretation, which can serve as an example for interpretation studies. |
