Globalization and cross-border exchanges make the translation of cultural products more and more frequent. As a powerful means of cultural communication, the web drama is a window for young people to understand the world.Day and Night is a suspense web drama. The drama is a fascinating and intense work of fiction filled with obscure clues and significant difficulties in translating cultural connotations, which is extremely popular among younger generations. On the basis of multimodal discourse analysis, this study explores the translation strategies of subtitle translation of suspense web drama Day and Night. In addition to exploring the text itself, multimodal discourse analysis is also employed to examine a variety of modalities, including the sense of hearing, sight, and touch. These senses communicate through symbolic resources such as language, image, sound, action, and symbolic resources interplay in subtitle translation.Built upon the comprehensive framework of multimodal discourse analysis put forward by Zhang Delu, this study explicitly investigates the level of modal relation. It classifies the subtitle corpus of Day and Night into complementary enhancement and non-enhancement.Accordingly,this study aims to summarize the translation strategies employed in the drama and illustrate the relation between modes and translation characteristics by using examples. In accordance with the discussion and analysis, this study finds that literal translation is the leading translation strategy under the relation of enhancement;Free translation is the primary translation strategy under the relation of non-enhancement.It is worth noting that free translation is a significant strategic choice tendency no matter what kind of modal relation exists. In order to provide a better viewing experience for the target language audience due to the involvement of picture modes, translators are required to combine image information and language information more flexibly in order to integrate the two modes as well as to reinstate the rigorous logical derivation process underlying the suspense drama.By means of examining the translation strategies of suspense web drama from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis and focusing on the modal relation between images, the study attempts to contribute to the export of more excellent domestic online dramas and improve the production of subtitle translations.
