Fusion Of Translators’ Horizons And Vision Of Intended Audiences

With the strategy of going abroad of Chinese culture,foreign translation of canonical texts has become a hot topic in Chinese translation research.Despite the support of many studies,it is still complicated for domestic foreign translators to produce popular translations of canonical texts,and most of the translations are hardly dominant in foreign markets.So,this essay finds it necessary that domestic research pay more attention to some best-selling translations,thus affecting the function of research as a guide for practice.Against the background of the above research,this paper focuses on two of the best-selling translations of the Tao Te Ching published in the United States,using the sales of the translations as the critical indicator.The paper begins with a brief introduction to the formation of the "fusion of horizons" theory and the expected research directions when combined with translation studies.It then briefly outlines the English translations of the Tao Te Ching and introduces the basic information of the two translations covered in this paper.The image of the Tao Te Ching in the eyes of domestic readers is then briefly summarized before summarizing the characteristics of the two translations through textual analysis.The causes of each feature are then explained from the perspective of the "fusion of horizons."From such perspective,this paper explains the reasons for forming the characteristics of the two best-selling translations in the US during two different periods.Also,it reveals that translators and readers have different needs for translations in different contexts due to various "horizons." This characteristic requires us to consider the characteristics of the times dynamically,analyze the perspective of foreign readers and adopt corresponding translation strategies according to the purpose of translation to achieve the best effect.
