As the reflection of the ways how writers see things and express themselves,the style of literary works is shown in the form of language.Ursula Le Guin’s works are unique in style with simple but clear language and rich implications.While translating her novels,it is of great importance that translators focus on the reproduction of not only the contents,but also the style.Taking the E-C translation of Ursula Le Guin’s “Pity and Shame” as a case study,the present paper attempts to solve the problems on the reproduction of her style of writing novels as guided by Liu Miqing’s Stylistic Marker Theory from aspects of Lexical Markers,Register Markers,Syntactic Markers,Textual Markers and Markers of Figures of Speech through corresponding,recasting and decolouring.For different stylistic markers in the original text,translators need to adopt different translation strategies accordingly: for Lexical Markers,Le Guin uses plain and sophisticated words,which can be translated through corresponding and recasting;for Register Markers,conversations between characters have rich connotations and implications,which can be translated through corresponding or decolouring on the basis of fully understanding the context,communication intention and character images;for Syntactic Markers and Textual Markers,Le Guin’s style is embodied in conveying rich connotations through concise and clear syntax and structure,which can be reproduced through corresponding;for Markers of Figures of Speech,Le Guin uses a lot of figures of speech in her fiction to make the language poetic and aesthetic,and style of this kind can be recreated through corresponding and recasting to reproduce the style of the original text to the greatest extent. |
