Since the 19 th century, there has been a "great geographical discovery" of China. At that time, the Chinese, led by intellectuals, gradually abandoned the concept of "China and the four barbarians" and formed a world consciousness of "the coexistence of all nations".During the period from the Hundred Days Reform to the Xinhai Revolution,a large number of translated works of western geography had emerged, which had a profound impact on modern Chinese geography. For the translators of the late Qing Dynasty, the process of translation is also the reconstruction of knowledge, since they are on the recipient side of western knowledge. The different appearance of geographical knowledge in the original work and translation can reveal the characteristics of the knowledge system of Chinese and Western geography,as well as the way of thinking towards the outside world in the Chinese society. This paper is a case study of Travels through Europe by American travel writer Frank George Carpenter and its translation by Yuxiu Sun in Late Qing Dynasty.Sun adopted a "translation and description" approach by adding notes, comments and extra translated articles from encyclopedias, biographies, and other books on geography.Comparing the original text and the translated text,it can be found that Sun tended to describe the natural environment as dangerous and thrilling, while manifest the poverty in European society. From the theoretical perspective of Transknowletology,Sun’s translation is in fact reconstruction and processing of Western geographical knowledge which accords with, differs from and conflicts with Chinese traditional geographical knowledge. In the late 19 th century and early 20 th century, the Commercial Press, the translator and the students as the major readers had great influence in the publication of the translation. In this period of social changes, the translation had a profound impact on developing a concept of the world, the knowledge system of Chinese geography and modern education.
