As an image, symbol and background,"World Exposition" appeared repeatedly in fictional novels and travel reports in the late Qing Dynasty. The former includes Liang Qichao’s "The Future of New China",Wu Jianren’s "New Stones",etc. The latter includes Wang Tao’s "Wandering Records" and Li Gui’s "New Records of Around the Earth".This paper takes these two types of text writing as the research object, and explores the understanding and imagination of the people of the late Qing Dynasty about the World Exposition,as well as the thinking logic behind it.In the introduction part,it mainly explains the modern connotation behind the "exposition",then clarifies the text as the research content and object, and sorts out the domestic and foreign research results about the exposition. The first chapter traces the origin of the expo from a historical point of view, and sorts out its evolution from the aspects of the western world and ancient China. The purpose of this chapter is to trace the origin, and then understand the connotation and significance of the fair. The second chapter focuses on the word "nations" as a prefix. The Modern Expo is an international event with many countries on the same stage. For China in the late Qing Dynasty, clarifying the concept of the state and establishing the consciousness of the nation-state are the prerequisites for participating in international activities. This is a shift for the history of thought.Taking this as the keynote, when looking at the literary writing of late Qing literature, the enumeration of countries—especially the world powers—has become the part that has been written in great detail. With the background of many countries and powerful countries, the literati in the late Qing Dynasty constantly tried to paint a new portrait of a prosperous age,and behind it was a profound imprint of the past of "the coming of all countries to the dynasty".The third chapter mainly starts from the description of the "things" of the exposition in the literature of the late Qing Dynasty, and excavates the traces of modernity in it.Whether it is the colorful exhibits at the venue,or the lights shining on the exhibits,or the benches in the garden for tourists to rest, they are all auspicious pieces of modern civilization.Even the space of the expo venue itself has become a path that separates tradition and modernity. This chapter contains several modern aspects such as the development of objects and technology at the fair, democracy and public space, and new ways of travel. The last chapter returns to the historical facts. After all,the grand scene is a literary fiction and the elegance of other countries. In the late Qing Dynasty,China, with backward technology and civilization, and endless internal and external troubles, received mostly humiliation and injustice when participating in international events.Literary writing in this dimension presents a marginalized and alienated empire of stagnation. In short, the literary writing of the "World Exposition" in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China is to project a huge silhouette of a prosperous world on the paper, which contains the nostalgia for the past of the Celestial Dynasty, the hope for the future China, and the modernity of the present world.recognition and perception. |
