Report On The E-C Machine Translation Post-Editing Of Abstracts From Perspectives

Perspectives is a classic international journal in translation studies.Translation of Perspectives will promote the development of Chinese translatology.The rapid development of machine translation(MT)has greatly improved the efficiency of translation,and promoted the spread of knowledge,but the resulting problems such as frequent translation errors require post-editing(PE).Abstracts of Perspectives are chosen to be examples.With reference to Reiss’ s text typology theory,this report focuses on exploring PE skills by mainly applying the case analysis method,combining the IMRC model in genre analysis,requirements of PE proposed by the Translation Automation User Society(TAUS)and the standards of ISO 18587: 2017.The aim is to explore more targeted PE skills of the Chinese translation of abstracts in translatology.The findings of this report are as follows.Firstly,three PE criteria,accuracy,consistency and logicality,for PE Perspectives are summarized.Secondly,under the IMRC model in genre analysis,the distribution of MT errors in abstracts has the following characteristics.Lexical errors are primarily in the two moves of introduction and methodology,and passive voice errors are mainly in the introduction and result moves.Thirdly,PE skills are proposed to deal with abstracts of paper in Perspective,including applying calque,interlinear notes and equivalent-seeking translation to achieve accuracy in terms correcting;adjusting the word order and converting voices to main consistency in content and style as well as omitting personal references and repeating keywords to ensure logicality of the text.By PE abstracts of Perspectives,the proposed skills can provide references for future PE E-C translation of abstracts in translatology.The Chinese versions can understand and draw on the international development paradigm,and promote the Chinese translatology to proceed to the world.
