| In October 2019,Tour of Hainan Co.,Ltd.posted news through its official website,which said that Union Cycliste Internationale(hereinafter,the UCI)has announced Hainan International Road Cycling Race(hereinafter,the Tour of Hainan)to successfully advance to the latest UCI ProSeries Events.The Tour of Hainan 2020 would become a public debut of UCI ProSeries Events in China.As one of the most influential road events of Asia,the Tour of Hainan shows the highest Asian level and aligns with top road races in the world.On the basis of studying the race rules issued by the UCI,organizers of the Tour of Hainan can learn from the experience of international road races,combining with the event’s characteristics to upgrade their organization.Therefore,Chinese translations of the relevant organization guidebooks are significant for Chinese organizers to further improve the road event’s preparations and standardize its process.Good translations may assist the organizers to narrow the gap between the Tour of Hainan and other international road races,making it mature quickly on the stage of ProSeries Events.This report focuses on the Chinese translation of several sections of the official organization guide,the ORGANISER’S GUIDE TO ROAD EVENTS(hereinafter,the Guide).Considering the characteristics that the source text includes specific terms,rigorous rules,strong logic and massive information,the translator chooses Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation practice.Evolving from "Dynamic Equivalence","Functional Equivalence"consists of the following four principles:lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,stylistic equivalence and textual equivalence.The theory emphasizes that target text readers and source text receptors should get roughly same feelings from the two texts and make equivalent responses based on the four principles.The theory’s specific guidance function to the translation practice is detailed in the report’s third chapter.The translator lists lots of examples to explain the guidance of the four principles on the translation of terminology,complex sentences,graphic instructions and incongruous organization backgrounds.Meanwhile,the translator presents the usage of translation techniques in completing the whole translation practice,such as addition,division and paraphrase.Based on the practice of translating several parts of the Guide,the translator concludes with the following limitations and suggestions.Firstly,the texts selected ought to be more diversified,such as the instruction to the UCI’s department,key players and safety considerations.Multifarious texts would expose more translation problems and deserve more thinking.Secondly,the application of Functional Equivalence ought to be connected to the case study at a deeper level.Thus,future study on the theory should continue and the rest part of the Guide,which is not translated,should be finished as soon as possible. |
