TCFL textbooks are important carriers for Chinese learners to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture,and the images of Chinese characters in textbooks will let learners know Chinese people in a way of "moistening things silently".Therefore,good character design can help learners understand Chinese more truly and comprehensively.From the perspective of "self shaping" and "other shaping",this paper takes the 1-4volumes of the textbook New Practical Chinese compiled from the perspective of "self shaping" and the level 1 and 2 of the textbook Chinese Listening,Speaking,Reading and Writing compiled from the perspective of "other shaping" as the research objects,and uses the methods of literature analysis and comparative analysis to extract data and analyze the text of the number,appearance,personality characteristics and naming methods of Chinese characters in foreign language textbooks.At the same time,in order to enhance the objectivity of this article,in combination with text analysis,we conducted a questionnaire survey on Chinese textbook users(students)and interviews with teachers to understand their concerns and views on Chinese characters in Chinese textbooks,and better promote the design of Chinese characters in Chinese textbooks.Through the above analysis,it is found that there are some shortcomings in the design of Chinese characters in the two sets of textbooks for teaching Chinese as a foreign language: in terms of appearance,the characters are dressed conservatively,and their five features are not recognizable;In terms of personality,there are too few characters with old ideas and distinctive characters,and it is easy for learners to form a stereotype by shaping negative characters from the perspective of "otherness";In terms of naming method,some names lack language value and cultural value,which is inconsistent with the age of the characters and the reality of China.Then,based on the data extraction and analysis of the textbook text,questionnaire and interview,combined with the persona function theory,this paper puts forward suggestions for the improvement of the design of Chinese characters in Chinese textbooks from four aspects: supporting dialogue function,stylistic presentation function,connection function,cultural development and communication function: shaping diversified personality characteristics and character relationships;The dialogue in the textbook conforms to the real context,and the corpus has "authenticity";Increase the scientific,systematic and interesting nature of teaching materials;Push culture with characters,and take the commonness of culture as the starting point.It is hoped that this study will enable more scholars to study the issues related to the design of Chinese characters in textbooks from different perspectives,so that future textbooks for teaching Chinese as a foreign language can not only help learners learn Chinese,but also better spread Chinese culture and shape a good national image.
